FUNCTION:
The Safety Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of drivers assigned to the DPCR transportation program. The Safety Supervisor ensures all routes are safely staffed and operated, drivers comply with company policies and DPCR requirements, and transportation services are delivered safely, reliably, and efficiently.

The Safety Supervisor serves as the primary field supervisor for drivers and provides direct operational support before, during, and after daily route operations. This position actively monitors driver performance, responds to service issues, conducts field observations, investigates accidents and incidents, coordinates driver coverage, and ensures continuous compliance with company policies and all applicable federal, state, local, and contract requirements.

The Safety Supervisor is expected to operate company vehicles and perform transportation services when necessary to maintain uninterrupted service, respond to emergencies, provide route coverage, or assist during staffing shortages.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Driver Supervision:
  • Provides direct daily supervision of all drivers assigned to the DPCR contract.
  • Conducts regular driver observations, ride-alongs, road evaluations, and field inspections.
  • Monitors driver compliance with all company policies, safety procedures, and DPCR contract requirements.
  • Provides immediate coaching and corrective instruction when unsafe or non-compliant practices are observed.
  • Documents employee performance and recommends disciplinary action when appropriate.
  • Maintains regular communication with drivers throughout the workday.
  • Ensures drivers maintain professional conduct and excellent customer service.
Route Coverage:
  • Ensures every assigned route is adequately staffed and covered each service day.
  • Coordinates with dispatch and operations to arrange substitute drivers for absences, breakdowns, emergencies, or service disruptions.
  • Responds to driver call-offs and operational emergencies.
  • Assists with route adjustments and scheduling modifications to maintain uninterrupted service.
  • Personally operates company vehicles when necessary to maintain service continuity.
  • Maintains familiarity with all DPCR routes and is capable of covering any assigned route as needed.
Safety Oversight:
  • Promotes a culture of safety throughout the transportation operation.
  • Conducts pre-service and post-service safety inspections and field observations.
  • Monitors driver compliance with defensive driving principles, loading and unloading procedures, passenger securement, student management, and vehicle inspection requirements.
  • Verifies completion of required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Monitors camera footage, GPS data, and telematics to identify coaching opportunities and policy violations.
  • Conducts safety meetings, tailgate meetings, and refresher training as assigned.
Incident and Accident Management:
  • Responds to accidents, incidents, vehicle breakdowns, medical emergencies, and service interruptions.
  • Conducts accident and incident investigations.
  • Collects witness statements, photographs, video, and supporting documentation.
  • Assists in determining preventability and identifying root causes.
  • Prepares accurate reports and maintains required documentation.
  • Coordinates post-accident retraining and corrective action plans.
Driver Training
  • Assists with new driver orientation.
  • Conducts remedial and refresher training.
  • Provides coaching following observations, complaints, accidents, or performance concerns.
  • Verifies required certifications remain current.
  • Reinforces company policies and contract requirements through ongoing field instruction.
Compliance:
  • Ensures compliance with:
    • DPCR contractual requirements.
    • Company policies.
    • DOT regulations (where applicable).
    • State transportation regulations.
    • School transportation requirements.
    • HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality requirements.
    • Drug and alcohol testing requirements.
    • Vehicle inspection requirements.
  • Maintains required records and documentation.
Customer Service:
  • Responds professionally to concerns from schools, parents, clients, and agency representatives.
  • Assists in resolving transportation issues quickly and professionally.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with school administrators, dispatch, maintenance personnel, and company leadership.
Operational Support:
  • Coordinates closely with Dispatch, Maintenance, Human Resources, and the Director of Safety.
  • Assists with route planning and operational improvements.
  • Reviews service performance and recommends operational efficiencies.
  • Participates in audits and contract compliance reviews.
  • Assists with emergency preparedness activities and service recovery planning.
Other Duties:
  • Operates company vehicles as required.
  • Works flexible hours as operational needs require.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Director of Safety / Program Manager.

Essential Functions:
